Notes for J. Edward Allison:
Trinity
Journal, Weaverville, CA 3/17/1888
Deaths - At the Dalles, Wasco
Co., Oregon, March 3rd, 1888, Mr. Edward Allison,
aged 70 years, 4 months and 13 days, formerly an old resident of Nevada and
Trinity County. He is gone from among us; gone forever. No more will
his genial countenance be seen in the fireside and social circles of yore, for
the places that once knew him, will know him no more. No wintry winds will
wildly sweep and waken him with murmurs chilly; His slumbers are too deep and
sweet, Beneath the northern sun and lily. We miss thee, dearly loved one,
And our hearsy are full of pain, While we listen for the footsteps We never
shall hear again.
Trinity Journal, Weaverville, CA 3/24/1888
Death of Edward Allison. - Under
the proper heading in today's Times the reader will be informed of the death of
Edward Allison, who formerly resided in this township, between Birchville and
French Corral, at the place now known as Skehan's ranch, and who was well-known
to the old residence of this township and county. A letter from his
daughter Lucy, now Mrs. William Vollmer's, of Trinity Center, dated March 3rd,
gives the following particular is concerning deceased: Edward Allison was
born in Madison County, Kentucky, in 1809. He came to California with his
family in 1850 and settled on the banks of Deer Creek, now Nevada City, where he
resided until about the year 1853, when he removed with his family, to what is
now the Skehan ranch, where he remained until the 1875, when he removed to San
Jose. In 1878 he moved, with his family, to Trinity Center, Trinity County, where he engaged in mining. Last
fall he was called to the bedside of his son, Charles at the Dalles, Oregon, who was then the lying ill with
typhoid fever, he having just buried his wife, who died of the same
disease. About the time Charles was recuperating and Mr. Allison was
preparing to return to his home at Trinity Center, he was taken down with typhoid fever,
and, as stated elsewhere, on the third of March, breathed his last. His
was a busy life as well as an eventful one. He leaves many friends, who
will grieve because of his departure, for he had a noble and generous heart and
was always kind to the poor and needy. Prior to his death he became a
member of the Methodist Church, and died in the belief that his sins
of commission and omission were washed away by the blood of Christ. His
voice of mirth have ceased; amidst the vineyard there is left no place.
Earth must take earth to molder on her breasts. Come near! Weep o'er
him-bear him to rest. The deceased left a wife, three sons, three
daughters and 14 grandchildren to mourn his loss. His remains lie buried
near his daughter-in-law, wife of his son Charles at the Dallas, Oregon, Peace to them. North San Juan
Times, March 16th.
Dee Bigler Letter 4/13/2000
Edward Allison, is
also a mystery, at this point he is known in this family to have been a gambler,
which is entirely possible. I found him on the 1860 census in CA, with our
James N. being 22 years old, but Edward has a new wife & family along with
our James. Edward is quite well off for the day, having may employees
& cash on hand, he is listed as a farmer, however on the 1870 census he is
listed as a hotel owner. Gambling was a big part of the California gold rush; in 1849 40,000 men went to
CA and less than 800 women. With so many men, so much time and money,
gambling took up much of their spare time along with other vices.

JAMES
N. ALLISON
James N. Allison. About three
miles east from Fruitland is located the fine residence and estate of the
subject of this review. A score of years ago, Mr. Allison made his way through
the then wild country, selected this place and went back to Fort Spokane, where
his family and stuff were, and took the light wagon and made his way to the
spot. The heavier vehicles could not be brought in. From that time
to the present, he and his faithful wife, who has always displayed true courage
and worth, have wrought to bring up their family and build a home, which have
been accomplished with gratifying success.
James N. Allison was born in Madison county, Kentucky, on November 4, 1839, and
his parents, Edward and Sarah Allison, were natives of the same place. In
1847 the family went to Platte county, Missouri, and in the spring of 1850 they
came to Nevada county, California, across the plains, meeting difficult
with the Indians at Humboldt river. Later they mined at French Corrall and
there on January 10, 1866, our subject married Miss Nellie L., daughter of Liba
and Sarah (Bradish) Washburn, natives of Vermont and New York, respectively. They removed to Jackson
County, Michigan, where Mrs. Allison was born August 15, 1845. Mr.
Washburn was a lawyer, made a raise on Poorman's creek, and voted the first
Republican ticket in Sutter county, California. He was a prominent and
influential man there and in Nevada, where he lived later. He first came
alone to seek gold, then returned and brought his family via the isthmus.
The mother of Mrs. Allison was an invalid for years and died at French Corrall
on September 3, 1864. The father died in Stevens County in 1890 and is buried on Mr. Allison's
ranch. Our subject raised stock in Sutter County until 1875 and then went
to Paradise valley in Nevada. In 1882 he came with a band of horses to
Fort Spokane and thence as we have related to his
present place. Five children were in the family then and the hardships of
frontier life and journeying in a prairie schooner were all endured by the
family. The estate of Mr. Allison is one of the best here, the residence
is situated in a most sightly place and the orchard, the first in the country,
is fine. Mr. Allison and his wife have labored faithfully and wisely and
have manifested great interest in all progressive movements and in building up
the country. They have six children Armillia F., wife of J.S. McLean; Liba
E., married to Laura Thomas; Lucy A., wife of Edward S. Sullivan; Albert F.,
married to Addie Bennett; Pearl L., wife of James L. Ross; James C., the third
white child born in the Fruitland valley. All live near Fruitland.
Mrs. Allison's grandfather, Daniel Bradish, was a patriot in the Revolution, an
officer in the War of 1812 and died in 1857, in his ninety-ninth
year.

James N. ALLISON & Liba WASHBURN pioneer families
to Stevens co. Washington
STEVENS COUNTY
James N. Allison b.Ky 1839
established a ranch, three miles east of what is now Fruitland,Stevens county,
Washington, in 1882 prior to Washington becoming a state, then known as
Washington Territory.
Mr. ALLISON, his wife Nellie Ellen WASHBURN-ALLISON
b.1845 MI (to Liba WASHBURN & (Sarah BRADISH - WASHBURN b. 1815 NY d. French
Corral, CA. 1864) their children, her father, Liba WASHBURN b.abt 1804 VT., came
from Nevada with horses for Fort Spokane, overland via wagons. James N. &
Nellie Ellen ALLISONS, children some of which had been born in California, and
some in Nevada, recounted the trip for many years, how their father had stored
his California Gold in the hubs of the wagons, to prevent it from being stolen
by robbers. The ALLISON family had been involved with horses while living in
Marysville, Calif. there they had a string of Show horses, they would take to
San Francisco to exhibit at Horse Shows. When they left Paradise Valley, Nevada
a Horse Trainer/Vaquero was accompanying them on the trip, along with a Chinese
Cook, some time along the way to Washington, the wagons came upon a group of
Indians, terrified the Vaquero & Cook left the wagon party in haste, and
were never seen again.
The ALLISON & WASHBURN family members arrived
safely at Fort Spokane, a military post at the confluence of
the Spokane & Columbia rivers in eastern Washington. Mrs. ALLISON'S new cook stove,
purchased before the trip arrived safely and still survives in Stevens county.
Albert WASHBURN b.abt 1843 NY, Nellies' brother, and a former Calif. Calvary
soldier, during the Civil War, had already arrived in Washington prior to the
Allisons, he had scoped out the country around the Fruitland Valley, and
suggested they hurry to acquire the good land before all was taken, in a letter
sent to them from Cheney, a town 10 miles from Spokane Falls, both towns were
vieing for the county seat at this time in the early 1880's, Spokane Falls
eventually winning out.
These pioneer families were not new to adventure
or travel, when they left the state of Nevada on their trip to Washington. James
N. Allison, had been taken by his father, Edward ALLISON b. abt 1807 Ky. to
Platte county, Missouri in the late 1840's, then overland to the California
Goldrush, along the way they ran into trouble with Indians on the Humbolt river.
James N.ALLISON, arrived in Calif. when he was 10 years old in 1850.
Family legend has it that Edward ALLISON, was somewhat of a gambler, he is
listed as a hotel owner in a 1870 city directory around Nevada city, CA. He disappears from this
families records as of yet, ( Feb.2001) a record written by a family member in
1942, lists him as being shot in a card game, in Diamond Springs, CA. James N.
ALLISON'S, mother,Sarah most likely did not end up in Calif. Edward ALLISON, was
in the company of a Jane, and several more children on the 1860 Calif. census
reports all born on CA. except one.
Nellie "Ellen" WASHBURN, left NY. as
a small child with her parents, on a ship for the Istmus, where her mother,
Sarah a invalid at the time, was carried across the land crossing by Chinese
coolies, to the Pacific, and then on via ship to San Francisco, and the
Goldfields of California. Her father, Liba WASHBURN, had been to California
prior to his bringing his wife, daughter, & sons Ira & Albert. Liba had
found gold on Poormans Creek, a tributary of the Yuba River. Nellie's
grandfather, Daniel BRADISH fought in the REV. war,his family seemed to be in
the state of Mass.for many years and is first reported in the area in 1635. A
family letter written by Liba WASHBURN, to his daughter, Nellie "Ellen" late in
1866, asks her if she has heard from the family back in Potsdam, NY.? Cemetery
records in that area of St. Lawrence co. NY. seem to provide a clue to the
WASHBURN & some of the BRADISH, family being in the area a good part of the
1800's. Providing a clue to how Sarah Bradish WASHBURN, was transported back and
forth from Jackson co. Michigan to New York, her daughter Nellie Ellen was born
in Jackson co. prior to her going back to NY and on to Calif. Postdam, NY is
very close to the St Lawrence river, in northern NY state, the St. Lawrence
river, was a water way route to the Great Lakes, and on to Michigan, this route
was used a lot prior to the Railroads being built, for the easterners wanting to
eventually reach the demarcation points for the Oregon Trail & on to the
west from Missouri.
James N. & Nellie Ellen ALLISON'S, Children:
Armillia F. m. J.S. MCLEAN, Liba E. m. Laura Thomas, Lucy A. m. Edward S.
SULLIVAN, Albert F. m. Addie Bennett, Pearl L. m. James L. ROSS, James C. m.
Audra Dutton. James C. ALLISON, was the only child of this family b.in
Washington.
James N. ALLISON, died at 96 yrs. 8 months, in Stevens
county, Washington July 11, 1936 his first wife: Nellie Ellen ALLISON, d. 1910
After his first wife's death, he was married to a Jane Cooper Andrews, she also
proceeded him in death, in the late 1920's.
A good percent of the
WASHBURN & ALLISON, dec. are buried in Greenwood cemetery, Stevens co.
Washington, near the town of Hunters, Washington. The ranch established by James
Nelson ALLISON, still remains in his decendant's family, Feb. 2001.
This
Pioneer family to Washington Territory has contributed much to establishing the
History of its roots, in the United States, from the REV War, War of 1812, Civil
War, WWI, decorated heros of WWII on the islands Iwo Jima, & Luzon, and the
Viet Nam conflict. The 1970's a grandson guarded the Pres. of the United States
of America. Although, many have been Cowboys, Indians, Homemakers, Dentists,
Ranchers,Mining engineers, Store keepers, Golf Pros, Teachers, Loggers,
Mechanics, Writers, Artists,we hope to preserve what family history we can to
the proud memory of those that came before us.

the New York Rootsweb, Liba is shown in Vermont in 1820 to 1839, and then in New
York State in 1850. There were several Washburns in Vermont by the
1700s.
Asa, Abisha, Ebenezer( tory-went to Ont. Can.) Have you tried US
Genweb for the states? If I find reference to a Liba in the coming
week.

JAMES
N. ALLISON
James N. Allison. About three
miles east from Fruitland is located the fine residence and estate of the
subject of this review. A score of years ago, Mr. Allison made his way through
the then wild
country, selected this place and went back to Fort Spokane,
where his family and stuff were, and took the light wagon and made his way to
the spot. The heavier vehicles could not be brought in. From that
time to the present, he and his faithful wife, who has always displayed true
courage and worth, have wrought to bring up their family and build a home, which
have been accomplished with gratifying
success.
James N. Allison was born in
Madison county, Kentucky, on November 4, 1839, and his parents, Edward and
Sarah Allison, were
natives of the same place. In 1847 the family went to Platte county,
Missouri, and in the spring of 1850 they came to Nevada county,
California, across the plains, meeting difficult with the Indians at Humboldt
river. Later they mined at French Corrall and there on January 10, 1866,
our subject married Miss Nellie L., daughter of Liba and Sarah (Bradish)
Washburn, natives of Vermont and New York, respectively. They removed to Jackson
county, Michigan, where Mrs. Allison was born August 15, 1845. Mr.
Washburn was a lawyer, made a raise on Poorman's
creek, and voted the first
Republican ticket in Sutter county, California. He was a prominent
and influential man there and in Nevada, where he lived later. He first
came alone to seek gold, then returned and brought his family via the
isthmus. The mother of Mrs. Allison was an invalid for years and died at
French Corrall on September 3, 1864. The father died in Stevens county in 1890
and is buried on Mr. Allison's ranch. Our subject raised stock in Sutter
county until 1875 and then went to Paradise valley in Nevada. In 1882 he
came with a band of horses to Fort Spokane and thence as we have related
to his present place. Five children were in the family then and the
hardships of frontier life and journeying in a prairie schooner were all endured
by the family. The estate of Mr. Allison is one of the best here, the
residence is situated in a most sightly place and the orchard, the first in the
country, is fine. Mr. Allison and his wife have labored faithfully and
wisely and have manifested great interest in all progressive movements and in
building up the country. They have six children Armillia F., wife of J.S.
McLean; Liba E., married to Laura Thomas; Lucy A., wife of Edward S. Sullivan;
Albert F., married to Addie Bennett; Pearl L., wife of James L. Ross; James C.,
the third white child born in the Fruitland valley. All live near
Fruitland. Mrs. Allison's grandfather, Daniel Bradish, was a patriot in
the Revolution, an officer in the War of 1812 and died in 1857, in his
ninety-ninth year.

The history of Iola (KS) begins with the year 1859.
After the location of the county seat at Humboldt, by the legislature of 1858,
there was a great deal of dissatisfaction, and a number of citizens of the
county selected the present site of Iola, with the intention of ultimately
securing the county capital.
On January 1, 1859, a large meeting of the
citizens of the northern and central portions of the county, was held at the
Deer Creek schoolhouse, near the residence of J. C. Clark. It was determined to
organize a town company, which was immediately done. A constitution was then
adopted and officers elected. J. W. Scott was president; John Hamilton,
vice-president; J. M. Perkins, secretary; James McDonald, treasurer; A. G.
Carpenter, B. L. G. Stone and H. D. Parsons, directors. The town company
numbered between fifty and sixty members. Among them were Wm. C. Keith, W. H.
Cochrane, J. C. Redfield, D. Horville, J. C. Clark, Simon Camerer, J. F.
Colborn, L. E. Rhodes, James Faulkner, Eli Lawrence, W. M. Brown, N. Hankins, W.
F. Brooks, John A. Hart, J. F. Cornell, Carlyle Faulkner, J. M. Faulkner, J. B.
Lambkin, M. A. Simpson, J. C. Parsons, Rufus Perkins, H. D. Parsons, Wm. Lewis,
A. Case.
The officers of the company after due consideration of
different points selected a site for the proposed town, about two miles north of
Cofachique, at the confluence of Elm Creek and the Neosho River. The site was
owned in part by J. F. Colborn and W. H. Cochrane. The claims on two
quarter-sections were bought, and were soon after surveyed into lots by A. G.
Carpenter.
The town company worked hard to get the town started. A
meeting was held to choose a name. Several were proposed, and the choice was
determined by ballot. Some one had proposed the name Iola, which was the
Christian name of the wife of J. F. Colborn. As a result of the vote, this name
was chosen.
Meetings of the company were held every week during the
first year and efforts made to induce settlement. By the close of the year a
number of lots had been disposed of, several buildings erected, and other
improvements made, as all who bought lots were required to make some
improvements at once. The residents of Cofachique despairing of making their
town a success, joined with Iola, and most of them moved to the new site, all
working together in the endeavor to secure the location of the county seat at
once.
. . .
The first building erected after the town was
surveyed was a dwelling completed early in June, 1859, by J. F. Colborn, who had
lived on the claim of which the town site formed a part, since 1857. On the
completion of the house, Mr. Colborn and his family moved into it, thus being
the first settlers in the town of Iola.
. . .
The first sermon was
preached in the unfinished residence of J. F. Colborn, in May, 1859, by Rev. Mr.
Hawley, a Methodist minister.
. . .
Iola Lodge, No. 38, A. F. & A. M.
was instituted early in 1863, and chartered on the 20th day of October, the same
year. The first officers under the charter were: J. F. Colborn, W. M.; J. Brown,
S. W.; H. D. Parsons, J. W.; William Avery, Treas.; B. Brewster, Sec. The other
charter members were: C. S. Clark, Daniel Brown, A. W. Thompson, William H.
Cochran. The lodge is now in a prosperous condition and has a membership of
seventy. The present officers are: A. J. Fulton, W. M.; H. M. Miller, S. W.; L.
M. Sawyer, J. W.; J. F. Colborn, Treas.; R. W. Duffy, Sec.
. . .
JOSIAH F. COLBORN, retired merchant, was born in Noblesville, Ind., February
7, 1829, removing with his parents when quite young to Clay County, Ill., where
he was reared on a farm. At the age of eighteen years he was apprenticed to the
blacksmithing trade. In 1850 he crossed the plains to California where he remained two and a half years,
employed in teaming, mining and working at his trade. Returning to Clay County, Ill., he embarked in mercantile business at
Lewisville. Mr. Colborn came to Kansas October 24, 1857; located in Allen County
and took up a claim (on this claim is now located the city of Iola); for a year he followed agricultural
pursuits; then for a time conducted a blacksmith shop. In 1862 he engaged in
mercantile business, following it as a clerk until the fall of 1865, when he
engaged in general merchandise business in partnership with N. Hankins. Two
years later he purchased his partner's interest and conducted the business alone
until 1882, when he closed out. He is now engaged in building and improving his
property, etc. Mr. Colborn was a member of the first Board of Supervisors of
Allen County, and for the past three years has been Treasurer of Iola Township. He is a leading member of the Masonic
fraternity in this county.

Descendants of Jonathan Curtis
Generation No.
1
1. Jonathan1 Curtis was born
February 19, 1689/90 in Wiltshire, England, and died Aft. July 11, 1757 in
Berkely County, West Virginia. He married Mary.
Notes for Jonathan
Curtis:
Information
for this entry was obtained from the Web Page of Wendell Curtis, (Ky. Col.)
Jonathan Curtis was born
February 19, 1689 or 1690 in Wiltshire, England. He died in 1757 and his wife was named
Mary. When Jonathan Curtis migrated to this country is unknown. In 1735 he
received a land patent for 713 acres in Frederick County, Virginia. A few years later land patent and
survey records indicate that Jonathan Curtis and his son Job owned adjacent
plots of land.
At the May 1744 term of the Frederick County Court, one of the actions of the Grand Jury
was to indict Jonathan Curtis for plowing on Sunday. The next month, at the June
term of court, Jonathan Curtis was indicted for writing and publishing several
articles against the Established Church. It will be recognized that at this time
there was not the measure of freedom of religion which later became part of
American fundamental law. A writer referring to this incident refers to Jonathan
Curtis as a Quaker, but the evidence for this is unknown.
As no other
Jonathan Curtis appears in the records of Frederick County, Virginia, during
that period, Jonathan Curtis, father of Job Curtis, is likely the same one
mentioned above who r an afoul of the authorities.

obtained from the Web Page of Wendell Curtis, (Ky. Col.)
Jonathan
Curtis was born February 19, 1689 or 1690 in Wiltshire, England.
Very little is known of Job Curtis. When Job Curtis was
born in 1717, even the counties of Virginia were relatively few. He was about 55
years of age when Berkley County was formed. Whet her he was born in
that locality is uncertain, but there is evidence that he lived at leas t a good
portion of his life in Berkley County, Virginia. (When West Virginia was formed in 1 863, Berkley County
became a part of that state).
Frederick County (a parent county of
Berkley) was formed in 1738 and the records of that county show that Job Curtis
was in the area at least as early as January 11, 1744, when he was a witness to
a transfer of 1,020 acres of land from Morgan Bryan to Joshua
Hedges.
Just when Job Curtis married Mary Cordry is not known, but her
father, Thomas Cordry, made hi s will on March 7, 1763 and Job was named one of
the executors. In the will of Thomas Cordry he mentions his wife, Martha (the
other executor); sons Thomas Jr and John Sr; grandson, John, son of John Sr;
daughters Sidney Cordry and Mary Curtis. The will was produced in the
Frederick County Court on March 6, 1764.
Apparently Thomas Cordry lived in what is now Berkley County, as an October 8, 1831 deed refers to
166 acres of land on Dry Run in Berkley County, being part of a larger tract granted
to Thomas Cordry by patent bearing the date October 28, 1757.
From his
will, made March 12, 1804, and probated April 24, 1804, in Berkley County, it
appear s that Job Curtis had at least fourteen children. Whether his wife, Mary
was the mother of al l of them, or whether Job was previously married, is not
known. As named in his will, his children were: Ann Curtis (Morgan), Rachel
Curtis (Ellis), Thomas Curtis, Jonathan Curtis, James Curtis, Job Curtis,
Rebeckah Curtis (Burris), Edward Curtis, Joshua Curtis, Seth Curtis, Martha
DeMoss, David Curtis, Sarah Curtis, and Catharine Curtis.
Job was nearing
sixty years of age when the Revolutionary War started. The Virginia Public
Claims records show that he and his son Job Jr assisted in the cause of American
independence. The Public Claims are the records of services rendered and
supplies provided for the purpose of carrying on the Revolutionary War. In May
1780, the Virginia General Assembly passed a n Act for procuring a supply of
provisions and other necessaries for the use of the Army. Certificate No. 253
was issued October 24, 1780, certifying that Job Curtis Sr, Job Curtis Jr, and
Wm. Anderson supplied a quantity of wheat in accord with the above mentioned
Act.

James N. ALLISON & Liba WASHBURN pioneer families
to Stevens co. Washington
STEVENS COUNTY
James N. Allison b.Ky 1839
established a ranch, three miles east of what is now Fruitland,Stevens county,
Washington, in 1882 prior to Washington becoming a state, then known as
Washington Territory.
Mr. ALLISON, his wife Nellie Ellen WASHBURN-ALLISON
b.1845 MI (to Liba WASHBURN & (Sarah BRADISH - WASHBURN b. 1815 NY d.
French Corral, CA. 1864) their children, her father, Liba WASHBURN b. abt 1804
VT., came from Nevada with horses for Fort Spokane, overland via wagons. James
N. & Nellie Ellen ALLISONS, children some of which had been born in
California, and some in Nevada, recounted the trip for many years, how their
father had stored his California Gold in the hubs of the wagons, to prevent it
from being stolen by robbers. The ALLISON family had been involved with horses
while living in Marysville, Calif. there they had a string of Show horses, they
would take to San Francisco to exhibit at Horse Shows. When they left Paradise
Valley, Nevada a Horse Trainer/Vaquero was accompanying them on the trip, along
with a Chinese Cook, some time along the way to Washington, the wagons came upon
a group of Indians, terrified the Vaquero & Cook left the wagon party in
haste, and were never seen again.
The ALLISON & WASHBURN family
members arrived safely at Fort Spokane, a military post at the confluence of
the Spokane & Columbia rivers in eastern Washington. Mrs. ALLISON'S new cook stove,
purchased before the trip arrived safely and still survives in Stevens county.
Albert WASHBURN b.abt 1843 NY, Nellie’s brother, and a former Calif. Calvary
soldier, during the Civil War, had already arrived in Washington prior to the
Allisons, he had scoped out the country around the Fruitland Valley, and
suggested they hurry to acquire the good land before all was taken, in a letter
sent to them from Cheney, a town 10 miles from Spokane Falls, both towns were
vieing for the county seat at this time in the early 1880's, Spokane Falls
eventually winning out.
James N. ALLISON, arrived in Calif. when he was 10 years old in 1850.
Family legend has it that Edward ALLISON, was somewhat of a gambler, he is
listed as a hotel owner in a 1870 city directory around Nevada city, CA. He disappears from this
families records as of yet, (Feb. 2001) a record written by a family member in
1942, lists him as being shot in a card game, in Diamond Springs, CA. James N.
ALLISON'S, mother, Sarah most likely did not end up in Calif. Edward ALLISON,
was in the company of a Jane, and several more children on the 1860 Calif.
census reports all born on CA. except one.
Nellie "Ellen" WASHBURN, left
NY. as a small child with her parents, on a ship for the Istmus, where her
mother, Sarah a invalid at the time, was carried across the land crossing by
Chinese coolies, to the Pacific, and then on via ship to San Francisco, and the
Goldfields of California. Her father, Liba WASHBURN, had been to California prior to his bringing his wife,
daughter, & sons Ira & Albert. Liba had found gold on Poormans Creek, a
tributary of the Yuba River. Nellie's grandfather, Daniel BRADISH
fought in the REV. war,his family seemed to be in the state of Mass.for many
years and is first reported in the area in 1635. A family letter written by Liba
WASHBURN, to his daughter, Nellie "Ellen" late in 1866, asks her if she has
heard from the family back in Potsdam, NY.? Cemetery records in that area of
St. Lawrence County, NY seem to provide a clue to the WASHBURN & some of the
BRADISH, family being in the area a good part of the 1800's. Providing a clue to
how Sarah Bradish WASHBURN, was transported back and forth from Jackson co.
Michigan to New York, her daughter Nellie Ellen was born in Jackson co. prior to
her going back to NY and on to Calif. Postdam, NY is very close to the St
Lawrence river, in northern NY state, the St. Lawrence river, was a water way
route to the Great Lakes, and on to Michigan, this route was used a lot prior to
the Railroads being built, for the easterners wanting to eventually reach the
demarcation points for the Oregon Trail & on to the west from Missouri.

I do not have a Liba W. in my files but a check of
the New York Rootsweb, Liba is shown in Vermont in 1820 to 1839, and then in New
York State in 1850. There were several Washburns in Vermont by the
1700s.
Asa, Abisha, Ebenezer( tory-went to Ont. Can.) Have you tried US Genweb for the
states? If I find reference to a Liba in the coming
week.

JAMES
N. ALLISON
James N. Allison. About three
miles east from Fruitland is located the fine residence and estate of the
subject of this review. A score of years ago, Mr. Allison made his way through
the then wild
country, selected this place and went back to Fort Spokane,
where his family and stuff were, and took the light wagon and made his way to
the spot. The heavier vehicles could not be brought in. From that
time to the present, he and his faithful wife, who has always displayed true
courage and worth, have wrought to bring up their family and build a home, which
have been accomplished with gratifying
success.
James N. Allison was born in
Madison county, Kentucky, on November 4, 1839, and his parents,
Edward and Sarah Allison, were natives of the same place. In 1847 the
family went to Platte
County, Missouri, and in the spring of 1850 they came to
Nevada County, California, across the plains, meeting difficult with the Indians
at Humboldt river. Later they mined at French Corrall and there on January
10, 1866, our subject married Miss Nellie L., daughter of Liba and Sarah
(Bradish) Washburn, natives of Vermont and New York, respectively. They removed to Jackson
County, Michigan, where Mrs. Allison was born August 15, 1845. Mr.
Washburn was a lawyer, made a raise on Poorman's
creek, and voted the first
Republican ticket in Sutter
County, California.
Mrs. Allison's grandfather, Daniel Bradish, was a patriot in the Revolution, an
officer in the War of 1812 and died in 1857, in his ninety-ninth
year.
