Biography of J. Kimble
Biography of J. Kimble
Excerpt from Counties of Porter and Lake, Indiana : historical and biographical (1882) found at
http://www.archive.org/details/cu31924104606235:
"J. KIMBLE was born in Hocking County, Ohio, February 19, 1828, and is one of a family of thirteen children born to Jonathan and Hannah (Runnels) Kimble. Mr. Kimble had no opportunity of attending school in his youth, and, as a consequence, is without book education. In 1854, he moved to Noble County, Ind., where he remained about five years, when he removed to Missouri and remained about one year, at which time he removed to La Porte County, Ind., and, in 1864, to Porter County, Ind., where he has since lived; he purchased 160 acres — the farm he now owns — in 1872. In 1849, he married Amanda Potter, who died in Missouri in 1859, leaving two children as issue — Wesley and Frank. In 1861, he took as his second wife Melinda Wolf, daughter of Levi Wolf, of La Porte County, by whom he has five children — Laura, Gerry, Alta, Corma and Myrtie. In politics, Mr. Kimble is a stanch Republican. One hundred and thirty acres of his farm are improved, and the buildings are excellent."

Biography of Jonathan Kimball
Biography of Jonathan Kimball
Excerpt from Pictorial and Biographical Record of La Porte, Porter, Lake and Starke Counties, Indiana, page 293:
"JONATHAN KIMBALL.
The Buckeye State has furnished Porter County with many of her prominent men, and not least among them is Jonathan Kimball, a progressive and enterprizing citizen. As far as can be ascertained the Kimball family are of German extraction,-the paternal great-grandfather having come thither from that country. It is supposed that Grandfather Kimball's name was Jonathan and all that the subject of this sketch knows of his father's people is that his father, with several brothers, removed to the Hocking Valley, in Ohio, at an early date. Jonathan Kimball, father of our subject, had three brothers: Solomon, George and Jacob, all of whom lived in southern Ohio. The father was born May 11, 1790, and was married to Hannah Reynolds, born September 10, 1797. They remained in the Hocking Valley until 1850, when they removed to near Ligonier, Indiana, where they made their home for a few years, at the end of which time they returned to their former home in Ohio. In their family were the following children: Hannah, born in 1811; Oliver P., born in 1814; Delilah, born in 1817; George, born in 1819; Nancy, born in 1821; Wesley, born in 1823; Mary A., born in 1826; Jonathan, born in 1828; Burton, born in 1831; James, born in 1832; Hannah, born in 1836; Amanda, born in 1839; and Lovina, born in 1841. Of these there are now living, Jonathan, Hannah, Nancy, Loviiia and Burton. Jonathan Kimball, the subject of this sketch, started out in life for himself at the age of twentyone, as a tiller of the soil, and was later married to Amanda Potter, a native of Ohio. Their family consisted of seven children, all of whom died when young, with the exception of Wesley and Frank, the former of whom is married and has two children, and the latter also married and has three boys living and one dead. Both brothers live near Holden, Kansas. After the death of his first wife Mr. Kimball was married in 1861 to Miss Malinda Wolf, a daughter of Levi and Eliza Ann Wolf. Mrs. Kimball was born March 24, 1842, and has borne her husband eight children, three of whom died young. Laura was born in 1866. The other children were Emerson, born in 1862; Effie, born in 1863; Elmer Ell., born in 1869; Alta Muesetta, born in 1873; Gerald C., born 1875; Dallas C., born in 1878; and Myrtle M. B., born in 1881. Laura married Lincoln Crumpacker, by whom she had one child, and by her present husband, John Vanslow, also had a child—Laura—who died in 1893. Mr. Kimball has been a farmer all his life and from 1850 to 1857 resided in the vicinity of Ligouier, Indiana, where he successfully followed that occupation. From that place he went to Cass County, Missouri, but after the death of his wife, which occurred there, he located on the farm where he uow lives. This land when purchased was covered with heavy timber and amounted to forty acres, and this he cleared and sold. He later bought other tracts until he now has a fine farm of 268 acres, all of the improvements on which he made for himself, and which are of the best kind. He has a fine country residence and as good barns and other buildings as one need wish to have. Although his early educational advantages were limited he is a worthy representative of a class of people who, from the most unfavorable circumstances, have made their way in the world by their own individual merit, and now in his green old age can look back over a life well spent. He is a Eepublicau politically, is a steadfast adherent to the tenets of the Methodist Church, and is in every respect a man among men in his section. His native sense of fairness and good judgment have placed him high in the estimation of the people with whom he has cast his lot, and no better example of the high type of American civilization can be found than within his pleasant and hospitable home."

TRIBUNAL NACIONAL DE REPARACIONES
DE GUERRA
Los Estados Unidos de Venezuela. - En su nombre.-El
Tribunal Nacional de Reparaciones de Guerra.
Vistos.
Dr. R. L. VilIanueva Mata, manifestó no tener
por el momento objeción alguna que hacer a la solicitud
de los nombrados súbditos alemanes.
Abierto el lapso probatorio, durante él las partes interesadas
promovieron la declaración de los testigos señores
Erwin Halle, Manuel Weintraub y Carlos Guillermo
Jagenberg.

Summary

Military Junta

Decree number 464

NATIONAL COURT OF WAR REPARATIONS

The United States of Venezuela - In its name. - The National Court of War Reparations.

Whereas. - On the twenty-seventh of May, nineteen hundred forty seven, German citizens Georg Gebauer and Ida Gebauer Weingart, addressed this Court, requesting that they be declared exempt from war crimes, in accordance with the relevant provisions of Decree No. 176 of the Government Revolutionary Board.

The applicants in question base their claim on the following supporting points: that they have always conducted themselves in a manner contrary to Nazi protocols and doctrines, rejecting them at all times and professing friendship with anti-Nazi German refugees. Such behavior always kept them off the Black Lists of the American and British governments; that the few assets that they posses they acquired through their work in Venezuela, where they arrived without money, because of the global crisis that reached the United States of America in 1931; that since 1923 they have been absent from Germany, living in Argentina and later in the United States, during which period, only Mrs. Ida Gebauer visited Germany in 1935, for reasons of health; that since January 2, 1932, they have been domiciled in Venezuela.

Having been accepted, this application was given legal tender and the National Attorney General's Office was notified, who in the hearing of May 21, 1948, through its delegate, Dr. R. L. VilIanueva Mata, expressed that presently it had no objection whatsoever to make to the application of the specified German citizens.

During the evidentiary period, the interested parties brought forth the testimonies of the witnesses Erwin Halle, Manuel Weintraub and Carlos Guilllermo Jagenberg. This evidence was examined before the First Parish of Libertador Court of the Libertador Department of the Federal District (commissioned by this Court), which gave the following result: The three aforementioned witnesses state in like manner, that they know the couple Gebauer-Weingart; that they know that the few assets that those citizens possess, they have acquired with their work during fifteen years of residence in Venezuela; that it is certain that they have always been enemies of the Nazi government and the doctrines that prevailed in Germany before and during the last World War; and that they were never included in the so-called Blacklists of the Allied Governments.

Regarding the corroborating data in the Handbook corresponding to the couple Gebauer-Weingart, it states that Georg Gebauer arrived to the country on March 2, 1932, that he is a carpenter by profession and was the owner, by the date of that Handbook, of a carpentry and fine woodworking shop, established in this city, with an income of approximately 60,000 Bs [bolivars]; that he has no police record and enjoys excellent reputation as well as commercial and private credit; that Mrs. Ida Gebauer Weingart arrived in the country in November 1934, left for six months and returned in early December 1939, and by the information from her passport, also corroborated by these proceedings, likewise affirms that the aforementioned German citizen was domiciled in Caracas, on March 11, 1936.

With those elements that have been analyzed, this Court rules in favor of the applicants, the circumstances set out in letters d) and e) of Article 10 of Decree 176 of the Revolutionary Government and so it is declared.

For the stated reasons, this Court, on behalf of the Republic, administering justice and by authority of the aforementioned Decree, declares the German citizens Georg Weingart Gebauer and Ida Gebauer, innocent of war crimes and frees their estate of the sanctions established in applicable law.

Publish, record, and inform the Administration of Nationalized Goods of the consequent belongings and file the record.

Given, signed and sealed in the Courtroom of the National Court of War Reparations, in Caracas, on the twenty and first day of the month of March of one thousand nine hundred fifty.

-- 140th year of Independence and 92nd year of the Federation.

Nathan's Notes:

"...when it comes to the actual document. It's really interesting. This is my general take on what it says (which hopefully makes sense as you read through it): After the war, Venezuela got a little German-phobic and appropriated the assets or estate of the Gebau[e]r family, who because they were German, were labeled as Nazi war criminals who had fled Germany because of the war. However, the Gebau[e]r family had already lived there for quite some time and objected to their assets being taken, and brought forth witnesses to testify that they were good people and were productive members of society. In the end, the court ruled in their favor, and their assets were to be returned.

"A few points: There was a lot of legal speech, some of which I simplified. I added hyperlinks to a few legal terms just in case they aren't clear. The document refers to a 'Handbook'; I'm not sure what this is, but it could be the state records. It's probably not the Gebauer passports because they refer to these differently in the document."
