- In a letter from Mamie to her own daughter, Rozella: "Yes there was 10 yrs between Elta & Walter. no children at all. My mother was very nervous and I think jealous any way. She was odd as far back as I can remember. Then she had the 3 boys and became very queer. When Lawrence was 3 mo old. She decided she was Christ come the second time. My Dad was the Devil, and went around talking & bothering neighbors. So after several weeks my father & Aunt Ella & Uncle Henry had her sent to the Asylum at Lincoln Neb. We moved to Sterling, Colo. We girls took care of the boys for a year. Then my father went to visit her & got permission to bring her home on trial. She wasn't well. We kept her home 2 yrs and finally she got pretty bad again and we lived in Fort Collins then. We had to have a trial then and she was sent to Pueblo. Lawrence was 3 then and Francis a baby. She seemed to be O.K. or nearly at the Hospital & wrote nice letters. I visited her on the way to Calif. She finally died of Cancer in her 70s."
